Rotman Academy Online School

Our Purpose

Rotman’s online academy was born out of the idea that all students should have access to quality education at affordable prices. Due to high costs of study abroad, many students do not have the access to programs that can help them advance in their studies–this is where our teaching staff steps in. Through an exclusive partnership with Jenison International Academy, we offer courses to those who wish to enhance their formal education and increase their knowledge in a convenient and cost-effective manner.  To visit our online academy's website, please click here.

Online Educational Services

Our Rotman Academy online school is here to serve as a provider of distance learning courses for students in China who may wish to enroll at universities in North America upon graduation. These courses are also designed as a way to take more selective courses in conjunction with their current studies. Enrollment in AP courses is also available.

For more information on programs, courses, and enrollment, please contact marygao@rottech.org.

Improving Education Through Technology

Through our Global IT Solutions team, we are able to bring better online services to students abroad. This allows for better connection to our live sessions and greater access to online materials. By utilizing modern technological advance, we can facilitate better communication between mentors and students.

Chinese Immersion

Rotman Academy will begin to provide a free to all Mandarin Chinese Immersion class in September 2018. Mandarin Chinese has been classified as a critical non-Western language by the U.S. government, and with increased ties to the Chinese market a strong language background is essential for future success. Rotman Academy sees the need for a Chinese program in the Grand Rapids area, and aims to inspire students to greatness through additional language learning and interest in STEM subjects.

In an effort to reach the community, the first year of classes at Rotman Academy’s Chinese Immersion program will be free. The course will start at one hour per week and increase to two hours per week; additional tutoring will be available for students upon request. Our program is all-inclusive (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), so that our students will be able to function in all aspects of the language. Those who wish to advance to HSK-level courses, students may need to pay a fee for learning and testing materials.

With difficult standardized testing methods being implemented into schooling systems around the country, it is critical for students to be able to perform well on tests while still engaging in valuable learning opportunities. Learning an additional language in core subject matter can help bridge learning gaps and improve performance on standardized tests (see Testing and Foreign Language Learning). Additionally, our program aims to incorporate essential STEM courses to improve abilities in the students’ target and native languages. STEM was developed in the belief that “success is driven not only by what you know, but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering, and math—subjects collectively known as STEM” (U.S. Department of Education).

Our programs are dedicated to creating an environment where students’ knowledge and experiences can grow inside and outside the classroom. Learning a second language enables students to experience cross-cultural education in a fun, authentic way. It has also been shown to aid in the understanding of the unique features of a student’s personal culture as well (see Studies in Attitudes and Foreign Language Learning).

Winter and Summer Camps

Every year, Rottech will host students in the Winter and Summer semesters from China as part of a shorter English language camp. These camps typically last three weeks, with intensive English courses and an array of American sight-seeing opportunities. However, these times are flexible, and can be hosted at the convenience of students interested in attending our camps. We will also be hosting specialized camps throughout the year (i.e. swim camp, art and music camp, etc.) for students who would like to experience the life of an American student. These will take place on a smaller scale than the our seasonal camps, and are available throughout the year.

For campers, we have our “base camp” (housing, teachers, schedules) to ensure a safe, positive experience.

Students who participate in immersion classes will be asked to provide assistance during these camps. In this way, students can apply the language skills they have acquired in a practical setting in addition to opportunities for social growth and mutual cultural exchange.

More information will be posted throughout the year. For those who would be interested in hosting a foreign student, please email Jessie at studentsupport@rottech.org, or visit our host family application.
